Recently, Chile has officially released its first national chemical inventory. The creation of this inventory was guided by the European Union's "REACH" regulations (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals). With this publication, Chile becomes the first country in Latin America to have a national chemical inventory.

The inventory includes harmful substances for industrial use notified under Decree No. 57/2021, with an extended deadline until September 30, 2024.

The details of the inventory can be viewed at the following official address:

Significant implications of the Chilean National Chemical Inventory

Confirmation of the "new" substances concept

Any harmful industrial-use substance not listed in the inventory will be classified as a "new" substance.

Compliance requirements for "new" substances

Before being imported into Chile, "new" substances exceeding 1 ton per year must undergo a registration process. This ensures that all substances entering the country are properly assessed and managed to minimize potential risks to human health and the environment.

Registration deadlines

For industrial use For non-industrial use (including professional and consumer uses)
Hazardous substances September 30, 2024 August 30, 2025 (starting February 9, 2025)
Hazardous mixtures August 30, 2027 (start date tentative) August 30, 2029 (start date tentative)

ChemRadar Insights

In practical operations, substances not listed in the inventory, such as non-hazardous substances or those with quantities below 1 ton per year, may cause confusion for the industrial sector and regulatory agencies due to a lack of specific official explanations. Additionally, the start dates for the registration of hazardous mixtures for industrial and non-industrial uses have not yet been fully determined, and the aforementioned dates may change according to announcements and regulatory updates from the Chilean government. It is advisable to regularly check the official websites of Chile's Ministry of the Environment or related chemical management agencies for the latest information. CIRS Group will continue to monitor and bring you the latest updates.
