Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC)

The Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) includes substances used in Australia between January 1,1977 and February 28,1990, as well as chemicals assessed after 1990. As of February 2022, more than 40,000 chemicals are listed in the AIIC. For confidential section of AIIC, companies shall submit an inquiry to the competent authorities.

► Chemical substances not listed in the AIIC are new chemical substances, which shall be classified according to the guidelines and requirements of the category before production or import.

There are five different categories for the management of new chemical substances: Listed; Exempted; Reported; Assessed; Commercial evaluation.

► Chemical substances listed in AIIC but subject to environmental management for new uses shall conduct environmental management registration for new uses, if they are used for industrial purposes other than permitted uses.

AIIC only includes industrial chemicals, specifically those with industrial uses, including a wide range of uses for inks, plastics, adhesives, paints, glues, solvents, cosmetics, soaps and other products. Therefore, whether the substance is an industrial chemical shall be checked before searching the inventory.

Under the AICIS, categorization is required for new substances.Additionally ,companies in Australia involved in importing or manufacturing industrial chemicals shall submit registration to the authorities. The registration period is from September 1 each year to August 31 of the following year.

Exemptions

The following substances are exempted from the AICIS:

  1. Agrochemical;
  2. Veterinary chemical;
  3. Substances used as or in the preparation of a substance or mixture of substances prepared by a pharmacist or veterinarian;
  4. Chemicals for therapeutic - under the definition in the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989; and
  5. Substances used as human or animal food, or used in the preparation of food.
