Introduction of PFAS
PFAS (Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals widely used in various industrial and consumer products. This group includes hundreds of compounds, such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA), perfluorooctane sulfonimide (PFSA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHxA), among others.
PFAS are persistent in the environment and do not break down easily. They can spread through water, soil, and air, posing risks to environmental and human health. Currently, many countries and regions around the world have implemented restrictions and controls on PFAS, although the definitions of what constitutes PFAS can vary slightly.
EU have proposed restrictions specifically targeting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This proposal defines PFAS as any fluorinated chemical substance containing at least one perfluoromethyl (CF3-) or methylene (-CF2-) carbon atom (excluding any H/Cl/Br/I), with a few structural exceptions. Our Global PFAS Screening Tool can help you identify PFAS substances.
