Pursuant to Section 25249.8(a) of the California Environmental Safety Act, Section 6382(b)(1) of the California Labor Code has been incorporated into Proposition 65. This requires that certain carcinogenic substances identified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) must be included in the list of carcinogens under Proposition 65. As the primary implementing agency of Proposition 65, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is responsible for assessing whether chemicals need to be added to the list.
Since its initial issuance in 1987, Proposition 65 has evolved into a list that includes over 900 chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The list covers a wide range of natural and synthetic chemicals, including additives or components in pesticides, household products, food, drugs, dyes, solvents, as well as chemicals or by-products of chemical processes used in manufacturing and construction.
