Starting in June 2025, Jordan will mandate adherence to the UN's Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for all industrial chemicals, according to the system's eighth edition. This requirement excludes radioactive substances, veterinary medicines, foodstuffs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) has informed the World Trade Organization that this regulation is set to be enacted on December 30 of this year. Chemical labels will need to be in both Arabic and English, detailing origin, contents, identifiers, hazards, precautionary measures, and pictograms. Labels must be clear and accurate to avoid misinterpretations of chemical risks.
Labels must be securely attached to containers, with hazard symbols in black on a white background, occupying at least one-fifteenth of the label area.
Further regulations include:
- Compliance of all imported containers and packaging with national safety standards.
- Clear labeling on each primary package within secondary packaging.
- Inclusion of a detailed hazardous material information sheet with each chemical shipment.
This policy enhances Jordan’s chemical safety standards and aligns with international safety practices.
