Japan Bans Manufacturing of Specific Mercury Products

On December 24, 2024, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, along with the Ministry of the Environment, announced that the Cabinet has decided to amend certain provisions of the Enforcement Ordinance of the Act on Preventing Environmental Pollution of Mercury. The decision will abolish the manufacturing of specific mercury-containing products, including certain batteries and fluorescent lamps, to prevent environmental mercury pollution. The new ordinance will be published on December 27, 2026.
