India Releases First Standard for Paper-Based Food Contact Materials

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued a public consultation for the country's first standard on paper-based food contact materials, which will continue until December 30, 2024. The standard focuses on setting limits for the migration of substances from packaging materials to food and beverages, including a "total migration limit" for non-volatile substances such as monomers, additives, and pigments. Additionally, it specifies migration limits for heavy metals and chemical substances, stringent material requirements, and clear labeling provisions.
