Jan 2, 2025

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) plans to expand its Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) by adding six substances from January, 2025, taking the total to 248. Octamethyltrisiloxane is among the new additions.

The Member State Committee (MSC), in its recent meeting, also discussed prioritization for the Authorization List and unanimously approved an evaluation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol along with three compliance check decisions.

The details are as follows:

Serial Number Substance Name EC/CAS Number Reason for Proposal Common Uses
1 Octamethyltrisiloxane

EC No: 203-497-4

CAS No: 107-51-7

VPvB (Article 57e) Used in washing and cleaning products, polishing waxes, as well as cosmetics and personal care products
2 O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate

EC No: 209-909-9

CAS No: 597-82-0

PBT (Article 57d) Used in motor oil lubricants and brake fluids, refrigerator coolants
3 Reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives

Reproductive toxicity (Article 57c) Used in hydraulic oils, greases, and metalworking fluids

Businesses handling products with SVHCs should note:

  1. A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must be provided when selling standalone SVHCs.
  2. An SDS is required if an SVHC forms ≥0.1% of a mixture.
  3. Detailed information must be shared within 45 days if a product contains >0.1% by weight of an SVHC.
  4. If a product contains a single SVHC >0.1% by weight and is exported over 1 ton annually, ECHA must be notified within six months.
  5. Products with >0.1% SVHC must be reported to SCIP from January 5, 2021, as per the EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD).

ChemRadar will continue to track and share SVHC-related updates promptly.
