The Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China was one of the former component departments of the State Council, in charge of health-related work. Its predecessor was the Ministry of Health of the Central People's Government, established in November 1949.
In March 2013, in accordance with the proposal "On the State Council Institutional Reform and Transformation of Functions" reviewed by the first session of the 12th National People's Congress, the responsibilities of the Ministry of Health and the family planning management and service functions of the National Population and Family Planning Commission were integrated to form the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The Ministry of Health was no longer retained.
