The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) (국립환경과학원) is a research institution operated by the South Korean government. It is responsible for environmental research, education, international cooperation, and the establishment of standard levels for various pollutants. The NIER was first established in 1978 as the National Institute for Environmental Protection. It acquired its current name and status in 1986.
