The Department of Economic Affairs in the Taiwan region is the highest authority in charge of economic affairs, including industrial development, international trade, and energy development. Its earliest predecessor was the “Ministry of Industries,” established in the first year of the Republic of China (1912). The affiliated agencies include the Water Resources Agency, the Bureau of Commercial Development, the Bureau of Industrial Development, the Bureau of Small and Medium-sized and Startup Enterprises, the Bureau of International Trade, the Bureau of Energy, the Intellectual Property Office, the Standard Inspection Bureau, the Science Park Administration, the Geological Survey and Mining Management Center, and the Economic and Trade Personnel Training Institute. It also oversees state-owned enterprises such as Taiwan Power Company, CPC Corporation, Taiwan Water Corporation, and Taiwan Sugar Corporation.
