About
The United Nations Environment Programme, commonly referred to as UNEP, is the leading and authoritative body within the United Nations system responsible for global environmental affairs. UNEP inspires, advocates, educates, and promotes the rational use of global resources and drives sustainable development of the global environment.
On December 15, 1972, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish UNEP. In January 1973, as the United Nations organization coordinating environmental protection efforts worldwide, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was officially established. UNEP's interim headquarters were located in Geneva, Switzerland, and were later moved to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, in October of the same year.
As an operational subsidiary body, UNEP reports its activities to the General Assembly annually through the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
