The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) was formally established in 1987, replacing the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), which was founded in 1947.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is affiliated with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. Its main tasks include: formulating and implementing national standards; enforcing conformity assessment procedures; managing BIS certification certificates; and representing India in international standardization activities such as those of ISO and IEC.
