2 Chemicals Added to Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC)

On May 24, 2024, the Australian Government announced the inclusion of two new substances in the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) under the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019 (IC Act). This allows these chemicals for industrial use in Australia. Companies importing or manufacturing these chemicals must comply with all conditions to classify them as "listed in the inventory". Companies importing or manufacturing industrial chemicals or products must assume the responsibilities related to proper classification, record keeping and reporting.

The newly added substances are as follows:

- Siloxanes and Silicones, di-Me, vinyl group-terminated, polymers with alkyl acrylate and branched alkyl acrylate

The chemical has been assessed:

  • as a polymer meeting the polymer of low concern (PLC) definition (Schedule 2 of the Industrial Chemicals (General) Rules 2019) and
  • as a polymer that is not a high molecular weight polymer that has lung overloading potential (within the meaning given by the Industrial Chemicals Categorisation Guidelines)
  • as a component of lubricants

The chemical has been assessed:

  • as a fragrance component imported into Australia at up to 1 tonne/year    
  • as imported in fragrance formulations at up to 1% concentration for reformulation into continuous action air fresheners and fine fragrances at up to 0.5% concentration, instant action air fresheners at up to 0.1% concentration, and other cosmetic and household products at up to 0.02% concentration     
  • as imported in end use cosmetic and household products at up to 0.5% concentration in continuous action air fresheners and fine fragrances, up to 0.1% concentration in instant action air fresheners, and up to 0.02% concentration in other cosmetic and household products
