List of Toxic and Hazardous Water Pollutants in China (hereinafter referred to as the "Water List") is a list formulated and published by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in conjunction with the National Health Commission in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Law on the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution of the People's Republic of China, and was released on July 23, 2019. Based on the Inventory of Priority Controlled Substances in China (First Batch), the "Water List" selects 10 chemical substances that can be controlled and discharged into the water environment, including 5 volatile organic compounds, including dichloromethane, trichloromethane, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, and formaldehyde, and 5 heavy metal substances,  cadmium and cadmium compounds, mercury and mercury compounds, hexavalent chromium compounds, lead and lead compounds, and arsenic and its compounds.

 According to the Law on the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution, enterprises, institutions and other producers and operators of toxic and harmful water pollutants listed in the List shall monitor the sewage discharge points and surrounding environment, assess environmental risks, investigate environmental safety risks, disclose information on toxic and harmful water pollutants, and take effective measures to prevent environmental risks.
